We know polyester is a fabric and that it has certain properties that make it a great choice for clothing. There is a slight stigma when it comes to fashion as it is an artificial fabric and not a natural choice like silk, cotton, or wool. But even if it is not natural, it must have its positive sides?
What is polyester?
Polyester is the general term for a textile (fabric) made of polyester fibers. The name is short for polyethylene terephthalate, which is essentially a type of plastic. the vast majority is based on petroleum. Polyester is often mixed with other fabrics.
The “miracle fiber” has been with us for almost a century and has established itself as one of the most useful and versatile materials ever invented. Take a quick look around your home or business and you will no doubt see something made from polyester: sofas, cushions, curtains, bedspreads, placemats, lampshades, and dog toys to name a few.
With more resistance, durability, and versatility than its natural counterparts (cotton, wool, silk, and linen). It is the material of choice for athletic apparel, athletic wear, outdoor gear, and the recreational sports market.
It’s also more affordable and can be easily dyed or chemically treated to obtain special properties, such as B. flame retardant or antimicrobial, which makes it undeniably the first choice for companies and institutions around the world.
Is polyester shrinkable?
Yes, 100% polyester shrinks a little bit when washed several times in hot water and dried on high heat. Cotton/polyester blends can also easily shrink. But if you follow regular instructions for polyester garments: cold water, cold wash, or permanent iron: they won’t shrink.
To definitively answer that question, we wanted to find out firsthand. So we took three of our most popular performance jerseys and put them through an extensive test. The shirts were washed and dried five times using hot water and a high-temperature dryer cycle. No detergent, fabric softener, or dryer sheets. only hot water and hot air.
The result was surprising: All three shirts shrank noticeably. Not a full size, not a half size, but they’ve shrunk. This is remarkable because polyester is known not to shrink. In fact, some brands advertise their anti-shrinkage property—a combination of multiple washing and heat drying.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of polyester?
In recent decades, advanced garment manufacturing technologies such as innovative fabrics, various textile blends, and finishing treatments have enabled the development of thinner, softer, more breathable (and more comfortable) fabric blends using polyester.

Does polyester wick moisture?
Moisture wicking is a natural characteristic of polyester. It is the ability or “capillary action” to pull moisture away from the body and disperse it through the material, allowing for rapid evaporation. This allows the wearer to stay cool and dry in otherwise hot and muggy conditions.
Petroleum-based polyester is the perfect fabric for this role due to its natural water-repellent characteristic. It’s hydrophobic, which means it repels water. Oil and water don’t mix.
Competing major manufacturers like Under Armor have made advances in the way fibers are woven or layered in the fabric, improving moisture-wicking functionality, enhancing breathability, and adding finishing features like stain and odor resistance. Some examples of other high-performance fabric brands are Dri-Power, Climacool, Cool Dri, and the list goes on and on.
Is polyester wrinkle-resistant?
Polyester is known to be wrinkle-resistant, but it depends on the quality of the garment. In other words, yes: polyester can wrinkle, but not as easily as cotton. Polyester and cotton blends are slightly more susceptible. Triple blends that are partly viscose, fall better and practically do not crease.
We tested for wrinkles by putting them in a pocket with other shirts for 24 hours, the polyester shirt barely wrinkled and came out clear.
Is polyester fabrics ironable?
Polyester can be ironed, but care must be taken as it is sensitive to high temperatures. If any creases are wrinkled, turn the garment inside out, set the iron on a low/warm setting, and use a damp cloth or towel between the iron and iron.
It would be better to hang the garment and use a handheld steamer, running it in a vertical motion until all wrinkles are gone. If you don’t have a steamer, it’s time to put one on your wish list because it’s affordable and fabulous.
Please note that polyester is heat sensitive; it can melt at higher temperatures and even at lower temperatures it can warp and become damaged. When using an iron or steam iron, make short strokes and keep it moving.
Does polyester stretch?
Most polyester garments, especially performance and athletic wear, can stretch a lot and tend to hold their shape. Much of this depends on the weave, construction, and quality of the fabric. The addition of viscose or lycra can improve the stretch factor. even more.
Is polyester fast to dry?
Polyester dries very quickly compared to its counterparts, faster than blended fabrics and much faster than cotton. Because it is petroleum based and hydrophobic, it repels water at a microscopic level. Moisture stored in the material evaporates quickly depending on the tightness of the fabric, especially in heat and drafts.
Is polyester easy to wash?
Polyester can be washed and dried normally without any special care or treatment. Although it’s less prone to shrinkage than other fabrics, use cold water and tumble dry low.
What is the best way to shrink polyester?
If your polyester item is bulky, you may want to shrink it down a bit. Here’s how: Wash your item a few times on the hottest water setting and dry on the highest temperature setting until you get the result you want. Once it stops shrinking, you have reached maximum shrinkage. Basically what we did in our test. We cannot guarantee these results for all polyester items, but it worked for us.
How does polyester feel?
Today’s polyester is designed for a soft, comfortable feel, and some newer polyester fabrics are achieving a cotton-like feel. Most performance clothing is soft, silky, and cool against the skin. Cotton-polyester blends feel softer and less synthetic but lack some properties. 100% polyester.
Is polyester sweat-inducing?
Polyester itself won’t make you sweat, but any garment with tightly bound fibers will have reduced breathability through the fabric. Polyester items tend to be moisture-wicking, allowing sweat to be wicked away from the body and evaporate rather than being held within the material.
Is polyester breathable?
Polyester isn’t often known for its breathability, but that’s another feature that’s continually exploited and developed with advanced design and manufacturing technology. The most important factor is the design of the weave and how tight it is. Many high-tech performance fabrics are increasingly being engineered to achieve a balance of breathability and moisture wicking. Remember: the moisture-wicking effect works best when more fabric is in contact with the skin’s surface. In other words, the mesh can breathe better but absorbs less moisture.
Does polyester resist odors?
Polyester naturally prevents odor because it doesn’t absorb or retain sweat like cotton. The odor is caused by the accumulation of bacteria, so bacteria will not accumulate when the fabric absorbs moisture. This is one of the reasons why polyester is popular with athletes and workers in hot conditions. That doesn’t mean it works equally well for all polyesters. And because polyester is oil-based, body oils can build up on the fibers over time, eventually causing odor. Certain technical fabrics are specially treated to be odor resistant to help them perform better. The simple solution is to wash your polyester items after each use, especially if you’re sweating it out in the field or working out like a maniac at the gym. Good hygiene and washing with regular detergent will keep it smelling fresh and clean.
Is polyester irritating to the skin?
A percentage of people find the feel of polyester irritating to the skin. A smaller percentage may have a mild allergic reaction. Blended fabrics like 50/50 or tri-blends feel more like cotton and retain some of the positive properties of polyester.
While nearly 3 in 4 consumers say they prefer fabrics made from natural fibers like cotton, they may not have experience with the latest polyester garments on the market designed for comfort. In terms of moisture-wicking properties, wool is the one natural fiber you don’t really want to wear when you’re sweating.
Can polyester keep you cool?
Polyester’s temperature regulation is a big selling point for athletes, workers, and outdoor adventurers. It does this by wicking sweat away from the skin and dispersing it through the fabric to evaporate, unlike cotton which loses breathability once it gets wet. Is polyester UV protective?

Is polyester suitable for swimming?
