What is sublimation printing on t-shirts?

Sublimation printing on t-shirts is a specialized printing technique that involves transferring ink onto polyester or polyester-blend fabrics. Unlike traditional printing methods that apply ink on top of the fabric, sublimation printing uses heat and pressure to turn the ink into a gas, which then permeates the fabric’s fibers. As the gas cools, it solidifies and becomes a permanent part of the fabric, resulting in a vibrant and durable print.

Here’s a breakdown of the sublimation printing process:

  1. Design Preparation: The first step in sublimation printing is creating or selecting a design. This can be done using graphic design software like Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator. The design is typically created in a mirror image to ensure the final print appears correctly.
  2. Printing: Once the design is ready, it is printed onto a special transfer paper using sublimation ink. Sublimation ink is unique because it has the ability to convert from a solid to a gas without going through a liquid stage.
  3. Heat Transfer: The printed transfer paper is then placed onto the t-shirt, with the design facing the fabric. The t-shirt and transfer paper are sandwiched together and subjected to heat and pressure using a heat press machine. The high temperature causes the sublimation ink on the transfer paper to turn into a gas.
  4. Ink Infusion: As the ink transforms into a gas, it penetrates the polyester fibers of the t-shirt. Once the heat is removed, the gas reverts to a solid state, bonding with the fabric and becoming a permanent part of it. This fusion creates a smooth, vibrant, and durable print that won’t fade or crack easily.
  5. Cooling and Finishing: After the ink has transferred and solidified, the t-shirt is allowed to cool. Once cooled, any excess transfer paper is removed, leaving behind the finalized sublimated print on the fabric.

Sublimation printing offers several advantages, including:

  • Vibrant Colors: Sublimation ink produces vibrant and high-resolution prints with a wide color gamut, allowing for intricate designs and gradients.
  • Durability: Since the ink becomes a part of the fabric, sublimated prints are highly durable and resistant to fading, cracking, and peeling, even after multiple washes.
  • Full Coverage: Sublimation printing allows for edge-to-edge and all-over printing, covering the entire t-shirt with the design, including the front, back, and sleeves.
  • Breathability: Sublimated prints do not add extra weight or texture to the fabric, ensuring that the t-shirt remains breathable and comfortable to wear.

Sublimation printing is particularly popular for custom apparel, sports jerseys, promotional t-shirts, and other applications where durability and vibrant colors are desired.
